An integrated 2-bit all optical analog to digital converter based on photonic crystal semiconductor optical amplifier

In this paper, by integrating InP/InGaAsP/InP Photonic crystal semiconductor optical amplifier (PhC-SOA) with photonic channel drop filters (PhC-CDF), we present a novel fully integrated ultra-small low-power all-optical analog to digital converter (AO-ADC). The self-phase modulation in the PhC-SOA can shift frequency of Gaussian input pulse. two output PhC-CDFs are designed way that appropriately codes frequency-shifted pulse PhC-SOA, which consequently converts them four desired levels. numerical results indicated center wavelength an amplitude modulated 1551.228 nm, temporal pulse-width 10.6 ps, and energy 74.4 fJ be shifted 1.652 nm. This is accommodated utilizing length 9 µm injection current 6.5 mA. then quantized coded levels (00, 01, 10, 11) point-defect PhC-CDFs. minimize AO-ADC integral differential nonlinearity (INL/DNL) errors compensating for effect nonlinear induced PhC-SOA. proposed design offers footprint 142 µm2 working at 10 Gs/s.
